Jordan Mason
Jordan Mason Inks deal with San Fran
Tue, May 3, 2022, 1:21 PM
The 49ers signed Mason as an undrafted free agent Monday.
Analysis: Mason ran 280 times for 1,558 yards and 14 touchdowns during his first two seasons at Georgia Tech, but he failed to replicate that type of production in his final two campaigns. The 49ers are returning their top four backs from a year ago and drafted Ty Davis-Price in the third round, so Mason will likely have an uphill battle to make the roster.
Trey Lance
Trey Lance Getting first-team reps in OTAs
Tue, Apr 26, 2022, 12:20 PM
Lance is in line to handle all the first-team reps with the 49ers during OTAs while Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) remains sidelined, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. "We're excited for that opportunity that he has [in the spring]," 49ers general manager John Lynch said Monday.
Analysis: Though both Garoppolo and head coach Kyle Shanahan acknowledged in the early weeks of the offseason that the veteran signal-caller would likely be donning a different uniform in 2022, Garoppolo's ongoing recovery from right shoulder surgery along with an active trade market that resulted in several experienced quarterbacks being moved has thus far prevented the 49ers from finding a trade partner. The San Francisco brass has since talked down the possibility of Garoppolo being traded or released, but at the very least, Lance looks like he'll be given every opportunity to compete for the starting job throughout the spring and early portion of the summer. With Garoppolo still in rehab mode from thumb surgery, Lance will get the keys to the offense during OTAs and during minicamp, and with an impressive showing in those workouts, he could head into training camp in the driver's seat for the starting job even if Garoppolo is fully healthy and still on the roster by then.
Elijah Mitchell
Elijah Mitchell Opts for offseason knee procedure
Mon, Apr 25, 2022, 3:32 PM
Mitchell said Monday that he underwent a cleanup procedure on his knee following his rookie season, but he expects to be 100 percent in advance of training camp, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Mitchell was a fixture on the 49ers' injury reports throughout the 2021 campaign, with a combination of the knee, shoulder and rib injuries as well as a concussion keeping him sidelined for six of San Francisco's 20 contests, including the postseason. The knee issue first popped up in early December, but Mitchell continued to fill a lead role out of the 49ers backfield when he was available for the final five games, as he amassed 373 rushing yards, 68 receiving yards and two scores over those contests. His efficiency took a big hit, however, as he averaged 4.6 yards per carry through his first nine contests, compared to only 3.8 yards per carry in his final five appearances. Mitchell is hopeful that the knee procedure along with adding some extra bulk -- he plans to play at around 215 pounds in 2022 after hovering around 212 as a rookie -- will allow him to recapture the success he enjoyed during the early portion of 2021.
Deebo Samuel
Deebo Samuel No plans for a trade, per Lynch
Mon, Apr 25, 2022, 2:53 PM
GM John Lynch indicated Monday that the 49ers don't intend to trade Samuel, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports. "I can't ever imagine wanting to move on from Deebo," Lynch noted during his pre-draft press conference Monday, adding that Samuel is "just too good of a player."
Analysis: Lynch's comments arrive in the wake of reports that Samuel -- who is approaching the final year of his rookie contract -- would like to be traded by San Francisco. Though Lynch didn't go into details, he did relay that he's had discussions with the versatile wideout, who's in line to land a lucrative second NFL contract regardless of how things get resolved between him and the 49ers. In any case, it's clear that the team would prefer to work things out with Samuel, but until or unless the 2019 second-rounder changes his reported stance regarding his desire to play elsewhere, there figures to be plenty of speculation regarding his status as the 2022 season approaches.
Jimmy Garoppolo
Jimmy Garoppolo Expected to resume throwing in June
Mon, Apr 25, 2022, 2:35 PM
49ers general manager John Lynch said Monday that he expects Garoppolo (shoulder) to start throwing around late June, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery March 8, and despite reports saying he'd be sidelined for 4-to-6 months, he's been adamant that he'll be ready for training camp. However, health is only one concern for the quarterback this offseason, as the 49ers appear ready to give 2021 first-round pick Trey Lance a chance at taking the starting spot. "We believe in competition. We believe [Lance] is ready -- he is ready to show us, his teammates and the world he is ready," Lynch said Monday.
Jimmy Garoppolo
Jimmy Garoppolo Expects to be ready for camp
Thu, Apr 21, 2022, 11:26 AM
Garoppolo (shoulder) hasn't resumed throwing but believes he'll be ready for training camp, Rob Maaddi of the Associated Press reports.
Analysis: Garoppolo's availability for camp is no sure thing, with some reports suggesting a timeline of 4-to-6 months after he had shoulder surgery March 8. There's also the matter of which team he'll be playing for, as NFL.com's Kevin Patra recently reported that the Niners still are expected to trade Garoppolo this offseason. Garoppolo's recovery from surgery is a complicating factor, and there have also been whispers that the Niners are nervous about No. 3 overall pick Trey Lance. It sounds like Garoppolo has avoided setbacks thus far, as he said Thursday that he expects to resume throwing soon, per SiriusXM NFL Radio.
Deebo Samuel
Deebo Samuel Wants to be traded
Wed, Apr 20, 2022, 12:00 PM
Samuel has asked the 49ers to trade him, according to Jeff Darlington of ESPN.
Analysis: Per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the 49ers have sought to discuss a long-term deal with the versatile wideout, but Samuel evidently would prefer a change of scenery. In any case, if San Francisco does elect to field trade offers for the 2019 second-rounder, there would no doubt be plenty of interest. Samuel is approaching the final year of his rookie deal and is thus line for a lucrative contract extension after putting together an outstanding season in 2021. ESPN's Adam Schefter previously reported that the 26-year-old wasn't expected to participate in any on-field work during the 49ers' voluntary offseason program.
Jauan Jennings
Jauan Jennings Sticking with San Francisco
Tue, Apr 19, 2022, 4:06 PM
Jennings signed his exclusive rights tender with the 49ers on Tuesday, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Jennings will return for his third season with San Francisco as he was ineligible from negotiating with outside teams as an exclusive rights free agent this offseason. The 2020 seventh-round pick caught 24 passes for 282 yards and five receiving touchdowns over 16 regular-season games last season after never seeing the field in his rookie season. Jennings also accounted for 51 rushing yards on 13 carries last season and should slot in as the 49ers' No. 3 wideout once again next season barring any changes to this position group.
Jimmy Garoppolo
Jimmy Garoppolo Continues to rehab shoulder
Tue, Apr 19, 2022, 11:18 AM
Garoppolo is slated to remain away from the 49ers' team facility, as he continues to rehab his surgically-repaired right (throwing) shoulder, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Analysis: Garoppolo, who underwent a March 8 procedure to repair a torn capsule in his shoulder, is not expected to throw until training camp in late July. The report notes that the QB has been rehabbing his injury in the Los Angeles area, while Garoppolo and the 49ers are said to be "on the same page" in terms of his offseason process. In Garoppolo's absence from on-field work, Trey Lance is in line to take most, if not all, of the team's first-team signal-caller reps, while Kevin Patra of NFL.com relays that it's still expected that San Francisco will move on from Garoppolo this offseason -- likely via a trade. If that indeed occurs, team's transition to Lance (the No. 3 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft) would be cemented.
Deebo Samuel
Deebo Samuel May skip offseason on-field work
Mon, Apr 18, 2022, 11:52 AM
Samuel isn't expected to participate in any on-field work during the 49ers' offseason program, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.
Analysis: Per David Lombardi of The Athletic, it remains to be seen if Samuel reports for the team's voluntary offseason program, which opens Tuesday, but in any case, the 2019 second-rounder -- who is in the final year of his rookie deal -- appears destined for a big second NFL contract in the wake of several fellow wideouts receiving hefty payouts this offseason. Samuel is coming off a fantasy-friendly 2021 campaign in which he racked up 77 catches for 1,405 yards and six TDs while adding 59 carries for 365 yards and eight rushing scores in 16 games.
Malik Turner
Malik Turner Gets chance with Niners
Mon, Apr 11, 2022, 3:04 PM
Turner signed a one-year contract with the 49ers on Monday.
Analysis: Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk head into 2022 as the 49ers' clear top two receivers, but Turner should get the chance to compete for the No. 3 role with Jauan Jennings and a host of other wideouts. Turner suited up in 14 games for Dallas in 2021, tallying 12 receptions for 149 yards and three touchdowns on 16 targets.
Marcus Johnson
Marcus Johnson Joins Niners
Thu, Apr 7, 2022, 1:16 PM
Johnson is signing with the 49ers, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports,
Analysis: Johnson has carved out a depth role on three different teams since entering the NFL in 2016 as an undrafted rookie. He's now 27, and while he's started 12 of his 41 career games, Johnson has only 839 receiving yards and three touchdowns to show for it. He spent most of last year in Tennessee, where injuries eventually pushed him up the depth chart and helped lead to the third 100-yard game of his career. Unfortunately, Johnson injured his hamstring in November and spent the rest of the season on IR. He's likely healthy by now and should compete for the Niners' fourth or fifth receiver spot this summer.
Kyle Juszczyk
Kyle Juszczyk Options picked up
Thu, Mar 31, 2022, 2:12 PM
The 49ers have picked up Juszczyk's option for the 2023 through 2025 seasons, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Juszczyk has been with the 49ers for the past five years, and now he's on track to remain with the club for the next four seasons. The 30-year-old appeared in all 17 games last year and rushed eight times for 22 yards and a touchdown while securing 30 of 38 targets for 296 yards and a score.
Trey Lance
Trey Lance Coach non-committal on starter
Wed, Mar 30, 2022, 11:30 AM
San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan would't commit to Lance being the team's starting quarterback in 2022 when asked about the matter Tuesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports..
Analysis: While Shanahan's unwillingness to appoint Lance to the starting role may seem worrisome to those in redraft or dynasty leagues who have invested in the 2021 first-round pick, at the same time, the coach also expressed confidence in the second-year signal-caller's ability to handle the starting job if called upon in 2022. In all likelihood, Shanahan's comments are a means of drumming up trade value for Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder), who still remains in San Francisco while the market for starting quarterbacks around the league has mostly settled at this point in the offseason. Garoppolo already noted earlier in the offseason that he didn't expect to remain in San Francisco in 2022, and it wouldn't make much sense from a cap-management standpoint for San Francisco to keep the veteran and his massive $27 million cap hit around past the June 1 deadline to cut him with minimal financial repercussions. The possibility exists that the 49ers could ask Garoppolo to restructure his deal at a more palatable salary, but even in that scenario, the 30-year-old wouldn't be guaranteed to retain the starting gig. Even in the unlikely event that Garoppolo is still on the San Francisco roster by the summer, the smart money would still be on Lance getting the keys to Shanahan's offense in 2022.
Ross Dwelley
Ross Dwelley Returning to 49ers
Mon, Mar 28, 2022, 7:01 PM
Dwelley signed a one-year contract to return to the 49ers on Monday.
Analysis: Dwelley wasn't particularly involved in San Francisco's offensive scheme in 2021, as he logged only 185 snaps with the unit. However, he remained a key part of the special-teams group. He should maintain the latter role, but he could also move up the tight end depth chart if either George Kittle or Charlie Woerner suffers an injury.
Jeff Wilson
Jeff Wilson Staying with San Francisco
Wed, Mar 23, 2022, 1:42 PM
Wilson agreed Wednesday with the 49ers on a new contract, David Lombardi of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: The 26-year-old running back first latched on with the 49ers as an undrafted rookie in 2018, and he'll now stick in San Francisco for a fifth straight season. During his run with the team, Wilson has made nine starts -- including four in 2021 -- despite opening the season third or fourth on the team's depth chart most years. Heading into the 2022 season, Wilson will likely be behind Elijah Mitchell, at the very least, and he could also face additional competition for backup work if the Niners bring in another veteran and/or a draft pick. For now, the team has Mitchell, Wilson, Trey Sermon and JaMycal Hasty, with each of the four seemingly healthy after dealing with various injuries throughout 2021.
Ray-Ray McCloud
Ray-Ray McCloud Lands with San Francisco
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 9:43 PM
McCloud signed a two-year contract with the 49ers on Thursday, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: McCloud was a key contributor for the Steelers in 2021. He regularly served as the team's third receiver and managed to haul in a career-best 39 passes for 277 yards. His role as a pass catcher is likely to dwindle in San Francisco as he will slot in behind at least Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk on the depth chart while also battling for targets with George Kittle. As a result, McCloud's primary value could come as a punt returner, as he led the NFL with 367 punt return yards in 2021.
George Kittle
George Kittle Restructures contract
Wed, Mar 16, 2022, 8:35 AM
Kittle has agreed to restructure his contract, Field Yates of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Kittle has four seasons remaining on the five-year, $75 million extension he signed in August 2020. This restructure likely entails converting most of his 2022 base salary into a bonus, which could free up nearly $8 million in cap space for the Niners. The 28-year-old tight end will be part of a talented pass-catching corps joined by WRs Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk.
Raheem Mostert
Raheem Mostert Recovery going well
Fri, Mar 11, 2022, 9:15 AM
Mostert (knee) is on track to make a full recovery by the start of the 2022 season, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Mostert's recovery process is exceeding expectations, per Schefter, though the details of his exact timetable remain undisclosed. The soon-to-be 30-year-old will become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year, and given that injuries have limited Mostert to just nine appearances across the last two seasons, it remains to be seen whether teams will view him as a potential starting option on the open market. Mostert underwent surgery to address chipped cartilage in the meniscus of his left knee Oct. 12.
Nate Sudfeld
Nate Sudfeld Sticking with 49ers
Thu, Mar 10, 2022, 7:37 PM
Sudfeld signed a reserve/future contract with the 49ers on Thursday.
Analysis: Sudfeld spent the majority of the 2021 season on the 49ers' practice squad, but was elevated to the active roster and a gameday inactive on four occasions. He could occupy the backup role in 2022 if Jimmy Garoppolo (shoulder) is traded, but San Francisco would likely bring in more competition at the position if that is the case.
